A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
